The GSM Decision – Why 220 GSM for the Classic Tee, 260 GSM for the Hoodie, 300 GSM for the Heavyweight: The Decision Framework Behind Every Euphor Fabric Weight Choice


GSM Is the Most Important Number on a Garment. Most Brands Don’t Tell You What It Is.

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It’s the measure of how much fabric is packed into each square metre of the material your garment is made from. A higher GSM means more fabric, more weight, more structure, more durability, and – usually – more cost.

Most brands don’t publish their GSM. They say “premium cotton” or “heavyweight fabric” without telling you what that means in numbers. We publish ours on every product page because we think you should know exactly what you’re buying.

But publishing the number is only half the story. The other half is why we chose that number for each product – and what it means for how the garment fits, feels, and lasts.

What GSM Actually Affects

Before the decision framework, it’s worth understanding what GSM actually changes about a garment:

Weight and drape: Higher GSM = heavier garment. Our Terry Oversized Tee feels noticeably heavier than a standard 180 GSM tee in the same size. The drape is different – heavier fabric falls more deliberately, holds its shape better, and moves differently on the body.

Structure: Higher GSM fabric has more body. It holds its shape through the day, through washing, and through wear. Lower GSM fabric is more prone to losing shape, pilling, and looking worn faster.

Warmth: More fabric = more insulation. This matters for Indian climate conditions – our Terry Oversized Tee is appropriate for Bangalore evenings and Delhi autumn layering.

Durability: Higher GSM fabric is generally more durable. More fabric means more resistance to wear, tearing, and pilling. A 220 GSM tee will outlast a 150 GSM tee in the same conditions.

Cost: More fabric = higher cost. This is why fast fashion brands use 130–150 GSM fabric. It’s cheaper to produce. The garment feels lighter and less substantial, but the margin is better.

Fit interaction: GSM affects how fit reads on the body. A 220 GSM Oversized Classic T-Shirt with 8–10 cm of chest ease looks structured and intentional. The same ease in a 150 GSM tee looks thin and shapeless. This is why GSM and fit are inseparable – you can’t evaluate one without the other.

Indian climate context: 220 GSM works year-round in Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad. In Delhi and North India, it’s a summer and monsoon tee – in winter, it becomes a base layer under a hoodie or jacket.

260 GSM – The Terry Tee and Heavyweight Standard

Why 260 GSM for the heavyweight tee: The Terry Oversized Tee is a different product from the Classic Tee – not just a heavier version of the same thing. At 260 GSM, the tee has enough structure to function as a standalone piece in cooler weather, enough weight to drape differently from the 220 GSM, and enough substance to justify a higher price point.

What 260 GSM feels like on a tee: Significantly heavier than the 220 GSM. The fabric is stiffer – it holds its shape more rigidly. The drape is more deliberate. The tee feels like a considered garment rather than a basic.

Fit note: The Terry Oversized Tee reads slightly smaller than the 220 GSM in the same size – the stiffer fabric has less give. If you’re between sizes, size up.

Indian climate context: 260 GSM works year-round in Bangalore (as outerwear in the evening, as a layer in AC environments during the day). In Mumbai and Chennai, it’s primarily an AC garment. In Delhi, it’s a monsoon-to-autumn piece and a winter mid-layer.


The GSM Decision Framework – How We Choose

When we’re developing a new product, the GSM decision follows a framework:

Step 1: What is the primary use case?
Everyday tee → 220 GSM (Oversized Classic T-Shirt). Heavyweight tee → 260 GSM (Terry Oversized Tee). Ringer tee → 220 GSM (Ringer T-Shirt).

Step 2: What is the primary climate context?
Year-round Indian conditions (Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai) → 220–260 GSM range. North India winter (Delhi, Chandigarh) → 260+ GSM range.

Step 3: How does the GSM interact with the silhouette?
Relaxed fit tee → 220 GSM minimum (lower GSM makes the ease look shapeless). Oversized raglan → 220 GSM minimum (Oversized Raglan). Heavyweight tee → 260 GSM minimum.

Step 4: What is the price point implication?
Higher GSM = higher cost = higher price. We don’t use GSM to justify price – we use it to justify quality. The price follows the GSM, not the other way around.


Why We Don’t Do Low GSM

The cheapest tees on the market are 130–150 GSM. They’re light, they’re thin, and they’re cheap to produce. They’re also transparent in strong light, prone to pilling, and lose their shape after a few washes.

We don’t make anything below 220 GSM. This is a deliberate choice – not a cost constraint. A 150 GSM tee at Euphor’s price point would be dishonest. The fabric weight is part of what you’re paying for when you buy our Oversized Classic T-Shirt or our Terry Oversized Tee.
