Size & Fit #1 – How to Measure Yourself Correctly (The Only Guide You’ll Ever Need)

June 15, 2026 – 8 PM IST – The Size & Fit Guide #1

How to Measure Yourself Correctly – The Only Guide You’ll Ever Need for Getting Your Size Right Every Time

The Wrong Size Is the Most Expensive Mistake in Fashion.

Not because of the return shipping. Because of what happens after.

A tee that’s too tight across the chest gets worn once and forgotten. A hoodie that’s too short in the body looks wrong every time you reach for something. A pair of joggers that’s too long gets bunched at the ankle and never looks intentional.

Wrong size = low wear frequency = high cost-per-wear = money wasted.

The solution is simple: measure yourself correctly before you buy. Not guess. Not “I’m usually a medium.” Measure.

This is the complete self-measurement guide – every measurement you need, how to take it correctly, and how to use it to find your perfect Euphor size every time.

What You Need Before You Start

A soft measuring tape – the kind used for tailoring. Available at any fabric shop in India for ₹20–50. Do not use a rigid metal tape measure – it won’t curve around your body correctly.
A friend – ideally. Some measurements are difficult to take accurately on yourself. If you’re measuring alone, we’ll note which measurements are easier solo and which benefit from a second person.
A mirror – to check tape placement.
Light, fitted clothing – measure over a thin t-shirt or vest, not over a hoodie or jacket. Bulky clothing adds false centimetres.

The 5 Measurements That Matter for Euphor Sizing

Measurement 1: Chest (Most Important)

What it is: The circumference of your chest at its widest point – across the fullest part of your chest, under your arms.

How to measure:

  1. Stand straight, arms relaxed at your sides.
  2. Wrap the measuring tape around your chest at the fullest point – typically across the nipple line.
  3. Keep the tape horizontal – parallel to the floor all the way around.
  4. The tape should be snug but not tight. You should be able to slide two fingers under it.
  5. Read the measurement at the front where the tape meets.
  6. Take a normal breath and measure – don’t puff your chest out or suck it in.

Common mistakes:
❌ Tape angled down at the back (gives a smaller reading than actual)
❌ Tape too tight (gives a smaller reading)
❌ Measuring over a thick layer (gives a larger reading)
❌ Measuring too high (across the collarbone) or too low (across the stomach)

Solo tip: This measurement is easiest to take alone. Use a mirror to check the tape is horizontal at the back.

Measurement 2: Shoulders

What it is: The distance across your back from the edge of one shoulder to the edge of the other – measured across the shoulder blades.

How to measure:

  1. Stand straight, arms relaxed at your sides.
  2. Find the bony point at the top of each shoulder (the acromion – where your shoulder meets your arm).
  3. Measure from point to point across your upper back.
  4. Keep the tape straight across – don’t let it dip down the back.

Common mistakes:
❌ Measuring too far forward (across the chest rather than the shoulder)
❌ Measuring to the wrong point – should be the outermost bony point, not the neck

Solo tip: This is the hardest measurement to take alone. A friend makes it significantly more accurate. If measuring alone, use a mirror and take 2–3 readings to confirm.

Why it matters for Euphor: Shoulder width determines whether a tee looks intentional or sloppy. The shoulder seam should sit at or just inside the edge of your shoulder – never hanging off it.

Measurement 3: Body Length (Height Proxy)

What it is: Your height – used to determine whether a tee’s body length will work for your torso.

How to measure: Stand against a wall without shoes. Mark the top of your head. Measure from the floor to the mark.

Why it matters: Tee length is proportional to height. A tee that hits at the right point on a 5’8” frame will be too short on a 6’2” frame and too long on a 5’4” frame. Euphor’s size guide includes recommended heights for each size.

Measurement 4: Waist

What it is: The circumference of your natural waist – the narrowest point of your torso, typically 2–3 cm above your navel.

How to measure:

  1. Stand straight, relaxed – don’t suck in.
  2. Find your natural waist – bend sideways; the crease that forms is your natural waist.
  3. Wrap the tape around at this point, keeping it horizontal.
  4. Snug but not tight – two fingers should fit under the tape.

Why it matters for Euphor: Waist measurement is primarily used for jogger and trouser sizing. For tees and hoodies, chest measurement is the primary guide.

Measurement 5: Sleeve Length (For Hoodies)

What it is: The distance from the centre back of your neck, across your shoulder, and down to your wrist.

How to measure:

  1. Stand straight, arm slightly bent at the elbow.
  2. Start the tape at the centre back of your neck (at the base of your neck).
  3. Run the tape across the top of your shoulder to the shoulder point.
  4. Continue down the outside of your arm to your wrist bone.

Why it matters: Sleeve length determines whether a hoodie looks proportional. Too short: the cuff sits above the wrist, looking undersized. Too long: the cuff covers the hand, looking oversized (which can be intentional – but should be a choice, not an accident).

The Euphor Size Chart – How to Use Your Measurements

Once you have your measurements, use this chart to find your Euphor size:

Size Chest (cm) Shoulders (cm) Height (cm) Waist (cm)
XS [XS chest range] [XS shoulder range] [XS height range] [XS waist range]
S [S chest range] [S shoulder range] [S height range] [S waist range]
M [M chest range] [M shoulder range] [M height range] [M waist range]
L [L chest range] [L shoulder range] [L height range] [L waist range]
XL [XL chest range] [XL shoulder range] [XL height range] [XL waist range]
XXL [XXL chest range] [XXL shoulder range] [XXL height range] [XXL waist range]

Note: Update the bracketed values above with your actual Euphor size chart measurements.

How to read the chart: Your chest measurement is the primary guide. If your chest falls between two sizes, refer to the shoulder measurement as the tiebreaker. If both are between sizes, see Size & Fit #5 (Between Sizes) for specific guidance.

The Indian Sizing Context – Why ‘Medium’ Means Different Things

One of the most common sizing frustrations in India: you’re a medium in one brand and a large in another. This is not a mistake – it’s a deliberate difference in sizing philosophy.

International brands (H&M, Zara, Uniqlo): Size to Western body proportions. Their medium is typically cut for a 96–99 cm chest. Most Indian men with a 96 cm chest find international mediums too wide in the body and too short in the sleeve.

Indian fast fashion brands (Bewakoof, The Souled Store, etc.): Size to Indian body proportions but often with inconsistent standards. A medium in one brand may be equivalent to a large in another.

Euphor sizing: We size to Indian body proportions with a relaxed-not-boxy fit philosophy. Our medium is designed for the average Indian male chest measurement with proportional shoulder width and body length for Indian height ranges. Full details in Size & Fit #2.

The takeaway: always measure, never assume. Your size in one brand tells you nothing about your size in another.

The 3 Most Common Measurement Mistakes – And How to Avoid Them

Mistake 1: Measuring Over Thick Clothing

Every layer of clothing adds 1–2 cm to your measurement. Measuring over a hoodie can add 4–6 cm – enough to push you into the wrong size. Always measure over a thin t-shirt or vest.

Mistake 2: Pulling the Tape Too Tight

A tight tape gives a smaller reading than your actual measurement. The tape should be snug – touching your body without compressing it. Two fingers should fit comfortably under the tape.

Mistake 3: Measuring Once and Trusting It

Take each measurement twice. If the readings differ by more than 1 cm, take a third and use the middle value. Measurement error is common – especially when measuring yourself. Two consistent readings give you confidence in the number.

How to Convert Your Measurements to Euphor Sizes

Step 1: Take all 5 measurements (chest, shoulders, height, waist, sleeve).
Step 2: Find your chest measurement in the Euphor size chart above.
Step 3: Cross-reference with shoulder measurement to confirm.
Step 4: Check the height range for your size – if your height is at the top of the range, consider sizing up for extra body length.
Step 5: If you’re between sizes, read Size & Fit #5 for specific guidance on when to size up vs size down.

Frequently Asked Questions – How to Measure for Clothing

Q: How do I measure my chest size for a t-shirt?
A: Stand straight, arms relaxed. Wrap a soft measuring tape around your chest at the fullest point – typically across the nipple line. Keep the tape horizontal and snug but not tight (two fingers should fit under it). Read the measurement at the front. Take a normal breath – don’t puff out or suck in.

Q: How do I find my t-shirt size in India?
A: Measure your chest circumference (the most important measurement for tee sizing). Compare to the brand’s size chart – not to your size in another brand. Indian sizing varies significantly between brands. Always use measurements, not assumed sizes.

Q: What is the most important measurement for buying a t-shirt?
A: Chest circumference. It determines the primary fit of the tee – how it sits across your torso. Shoulder width is the secondary measurement – use it as a tiebreaker if your chest falls between sizes.

Q: How do I measure my shoulder width?
A: Find the bony point at the top of each shoulder (where your shoulder meets your arm). Measure from point to point across your upper back. Keep the tape straight across – don’t let it dip. This measurement is easier with a friend.

Q: Why am I a different size in different brands?
A: Because brands use different sizing standards. International brands size to Western proportions. Indian brands vary significantly. The only reliable approach is to measure yourself and compare to each brand’s specific size chart. Your size in one brand tells you nothing about your size in another.

Q: Should I measure over my clothes?
A: Measure over a thin t-shirt or vest only. Never measure over a hoodie, jacket, or thick layer – it adds 4–6 cm and pushes you into the wrong size. The thinner the layer, the more accurate the measurement.

Q: How tight should the measuring tape be?
A: Snug but not tight. The tape should touch your body without compressing it. Two fingers should fit comfortably under the tape. Too tight gives a smaller reading. Too loose gives a larger reading. Snug is the standard.

Q: How do I measure sleeve length for a hoodie?
A: Start at the centre back of your neck. Run the tape across the top of your shoulder to the shoulder point, then down the outside of your arm (slightly bent at the elbow) to your wrist bone. This gives your full sleeve length.

Q: What if I’m between sizes?
A: Read Size & Fit #5 – Between Sizes (dropping June 24). The short answer: if your chest is between sizes, use shoulder width as the tiebreaker. If both are between sizes, consider your fit preference – closer fit (size down) or relaxed fit (size up).

Q: Where can I find Euphor’s size chart?
A: The Euphor size chart is on every product page and in this guide above. Chest, shoulders, height, and waist measurements for every size from XS to XXL. Measure yourself, find your size, shop with confidence at euphorbliss.in.
