Size & Fit #5 – Between Sizes? How to Choose When You’re on the Border

Between Sizes? How to Choose When You’re on the Border – The Practical Guide to Sizing Up vs Sizing Down for Every Body Type and Every Garment

The Most Common Sizing Question We Get.

“I’m between a medium and a large. Which should I buy?”

It’s the question that causes more abandoned carts, more returns, and more wrong-size regret than any other. And the answer is never just “size up” or “size down.”

The right answer depends on four things: which measurement is between sizes, your body proportions, your fit preference, and the garment type. Get all four right and you’ll never buy the wrong size again.

This is the complete between-sizes guide – specific, practical, and built for Indian body proportions.

Step 1: Identify Which Measurement Is Between Sizes

Before deciding whether to size up or down, identify exactly which measurement is between sizes. Different measurements between sizes lead to different decisions.

Chest between sizes

Your chest measurement falls between two size ranges – e.g., your chest is 96 cm and the size chart shows M at 92–96 cm and L at 96–100 cm.

Decision framework: Check your shoulder measurement. If your shoulders fit the smaller size, take the smaller size – the chest ease will be slightly less but the shoulder seam will sit correctly. If your shoulders fit the larger size, take the larger size – the shoulder seam is the priority. This applies to the Classic T-Shirt, Ringer T-Shirt, and Terry Oversized Tee alike.

Shoulders between sizes

Your shoulder measurement falls between two size ranges.

Decision framework: Shoulder seam placement is the most important fit indicator on any Euphor garment. If your shoulders are between sizes, size up – a shoulder seam that sits correctly is more important than a slightly looser chest. A tee that’s slightly loose in the chest can still look intentional. A tee with a shoulder seam hanging off the shoulder always looks wrong.

Height between sizes

Your height falls at the top of one size range or the bottom of the next.

Decision framework: If you’re at the top of the smaller size’s height range and the body length feels slightly short on the Classic T-Shirt, size up for extra length. If you’re at the bottom of the larger size’s height range and the body length feels slightly long, size down.

All measurements between sizes

Your chest, shoulders, and height all fall between two sizes.

Decision framework: This is where fit preference becomes the deciding factor. See Step 3 below.

Step 2: Apply the Shoulder Seam Rule

The shoulder seam rule is the single most reliable between-sizes tiebreaker:

If the shoulder seam fits the smaller size – take the smaller size.
If the shoulder seam fits the larger size – take the larger size.

The shoulder seam is the hardest fit point to compensate for on the Classic T-Shirt, the Ringer T-Shirt, or the Oversized Raglan. A tee that’s slightly loose in the chest can still look good. A tee with a shoulder seam hanging off the shoulder never looks right, regardless of how the chest fits.

How to check: measure your shoulder width (see Size & Fit #1) and compare to the Euphor size chart. Your shoulder measurement will usually point clearly to one size even when your chest is between sizes.

Step 3: Apply Your Fit Preference

If the shoulder seam rule doesn’t give a clear answer (both sizes have the shoulder seam at the correct point), fit preference is the deciding factor.

Size down if:

  • You prefer a closer, more fitted silhouette on the Classic T-Shirt or Ringer T-Shirt
  • You want the tee to look intentional and considered rather than relaxed
  • You primarily wear the tee alone (not layered)
  • You’re buying for smart casual occasions (office, dinner, rooftop) where a closer fit reads better

Size up if:

  • You prefer a relaxed, comfortable silhouette
  • You want room to layer a Classic T-Shirt under the Terry Oversized Tee
  • You’re buying the Terry Oversized Tee (heavier fabric reads stiffer – sizing up gives more ease)
  • You’re buying for casual daily wear where comfort is the priority

Step 4: Apply the Garment-Specific Rules

T-shirts – Between sizes

Primary tiebreaker: Shoulder seam. If shoulders fit the smaller size, take smaller. If shoulders fit the larger size, take larger.
Secondary tiebreaker: Fit preference. Closer fit = size down. Relaxed fit = size up.
Euphor recommendation: When genuinely between sizes with no clear shoulder tiebreaker on the Classic T-Shirt or Ringer T-Shirt, size down. Our relaxed fit has enough ease that the smaller size will still feel comfortable, and the silhouette will look more intentional.

Terry Oversized Tee – Between sizes

Primary tiebreaker: Shoulder seam (same rule as tees).
Secondary tiebreaker: Layering intention. If you regularly layer a Classic T-Shirt underneath the Terry Tee, size up. If you primarily wear it alone, size down for a closer fit.
Euphor recommendation: When genuinely between sizes, size up for the Terry Oversized Tee. It’s cut with layering ease – the larger size will still look intentional when worn alone.

Raglan – Between sizes

Primary tiebreaker: Waist measurement. If your waist fits the smaller size, take smaller. If your waist fits the larger size, take larger.
Euphor recommendation: When genuinely between sizes, size up for the Oversized Raglan. The drawstring waist accommodates the extra room.

The Between-Sizes Decision Tree

Question 1: Which measurement is between sizes?
→ Chest only → Go to Question 2
→ Shoulders only → Size up (shoulder seam rule)
→ Height only → Size up if at top of smaller size range. Size down if at bottom of larger size range.
→ All measurements → Go to Question 3

Question 2: What does your shoulder measurement say?
→ Shoulders fit smaller size → Take smaller size
→ Shoulders fit larger size → Take larger size
→ Shoulders also between sizes → Go to Question 3

Question 3: What is your fit preference?
→ Closer fit → Size down
→ Relaxed fit → Size up
→ No preference → Apply garment-specific rule (Classic T-Shirt/Ringer: size down. Terry Tee: size up. Raglan: size up.)

Body Type and Between-Sizes Decisions

Lean build (narrow chest and shoulders)

If you’re between sizes with a lean build, the smaller size will generally look better on the Classic T-Shirt – the relaxed fit of the smaller size will read as intentional rather than oversized.

Lean build recommendation: Size down when between sizes for tees. Size true to measured size for the Terry Tee.

Athletic build (broad shoulders, defined chest)

If you’re between sizes with an athletic build, the shoulder seam rule is especially important. Athletic builds often have shoulders that fit a larger size while the chest fits a smaller size. In this case, take the larger size – the shoulder seam is the priority.

Athletic build recommendation: Size up when between sizes on any Euphor product. The shoulder seam must sit correctly.

Broad-shouldered, narrower chest

This is the most common between-sizes challenge for Indian men. Shoulders fit the larger size, chest fits the smaller size. The shoulder seam rule applies: take the larger size on the Classic T-Shirt, Ringer T-Shirt, or Terry Tee.

Broad-shouldered recommendation: Always size to your shoulder measurement, not your chest measurement.

Fuller chest, narrower shoulders

Chest fits the larger size, shoulders fit the smaller size. Take the smaller size – the chest ease will be slightly less but the shoulder seam will sit correctly. If the chest feels too tight in the smaller size, size up.

Fuller chest recommendation: Try the smaller size first. If the chest pulls, size up.

The Between-Sizes Fit Test

If you’re genuinely unsure, try both sizes and apply the 4-point fit check from Size & Fit #3:

Smaller size:
1. Shoulder seam at the shoulder edge? ✅ / ❌
2. Can pinch 4–5 cm on each side of chest? ✅ / ❌
3. Hem covers waistband with 5–10 cm to spare? ✅ / ❌
4. Sleeve hits at mid-bicep? ✅ / ❌

Larger size:
1. Shoulder seam at the shoulder edge? ✅ / ❌
2. Can pinch 4–5 cm on each side of chest? ✅ / ❌
3. Hem covers waistband with 5–10 cm to spare? ✅ / ❌
4. Sleeve hits at mid-bicep? ✅ / ❌

The size that passes more checks is the right size. If both pass equally, apply your fit preference (closer = smaller, relaxed = larger).

Frequently Asked Questions – Between Sizes

Q: I’m between a medium and large in Euphor. Which should I buy?
A: Check your shoulder measurement first. If your shoulders fit the medium, take medium. If your shoulders fit the large, take large. For the Terry Tee, size up. For the Classic T-Shirt with no clear tiebreaker, size down.

Q: My chest fits a medium but my shoulders fit a large. Which size?
A: Take the large – on any product from the Classic T-Shirt to the Terry Tee. The shoulder seam is the most important fit indicator.

Q: My shoulders fit a medium but my chest fits a large. Which size?
A: Try the medium first. If the chest pulls or feels restrictive, size up to large. If the medium fits comfortably in the chest, keep the medium – the shoulder seam will sit correctly.

Q: I have broad shoulders and a narrower chest. How do I size?
A: Always size to your shoulder measurement on the Classic T-Shirt, Ringer T-Shirt, or Terry Tee. The shoulder seam must sit at the shoulder edge.

Q: Does GSM affect between-sizes decisions?
A: Yes. The Terry Oversized Tee at 260 GSM is stiffer and reads slightly smaller – if between sizes, size up. The Classic T-Shirt at 220 GSM has more drape – if between sizes, size down.

Q: Can I contact Euphor for sizing help?
A: Yes. DM us on Instagram (@euphorbliss) or email us with your chest, shoulder, and height measurements. We’ll tell you exactly which size to buy before you order.
